What were your TRUE influences???

Inspiration from the side discussion with Creeper.

For me, Queen, The Beatles, Elvis, The Monkees, Ozzy Ozbourne (Randy era), The Damned, Marillion (Fish era), Lords Of The New Church, Brian Setzer, Hanoi Rocks.

Those bands, though I might not sound like them all that much, gave me more inspiration to pick up and guitar and write and play music more than anything. My guitar sound is a bit of a steal from Randy. My lyrics tried being very Fish/Marillion like for years. Image was LOTC. Guitar style (hollow bodies) and aspects of playing are all Setzer and McCoy. Singing style is all Stiv. The Monkess, Elvis, and the Beatles were the first bands I got into at the age of 4. Queen were my first obsession in music.

My influences are varied:
Cheap Trick
Journey...Has been one of my top bands to this day.
Billy Squire
Duran Duran...Andy Taylor is what made me want to play guitar.

I'm not a musician/singer, but I have to say that 2 musicians who really ever gave me the wanting and that tingle to enter the crazy word of music, has to be Sebastian Bach and Joshua Todd, I think it's just the power in their voices and their image/presence, even tho nowadays I think Bas has slipped in a fairly big way...watchin' these guys on a tape or windin' up their tunes to a critical volume blows me away time and time again... for as much as it hurts to say this, when i started playing drums i idolized tommy lee. i never really tried to play like anyone but more like present like other people. i always enjoy seeing a show and not hearing it. i'm not into neil peart and all that technical mumbo jumbo. i like the tommy lees and the rikki rockets of the world. a technical drummer that i do appreciate is Stewart Copeland from the Police. love his playing. as for guitar, i borrow things off of everyone but don't know if there is one certain person or band that i can put my finger on as a BIG influence.

but i guess to answer the question:
Hanoi Rocks and Duran Duran probably had the biggest influence on my life overall and music wise, i always go back to The Rolling Stones for some reason.

My very first influence was The Beach Boys. My parents loved them, and listened to them a lot in the car, so I grew up loving all their tunes.
I love the melodies and harmonies they always used. When Brian started writing stuff like "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows", I was amazed.

Then in the early 80's, it was all pop radio....just about anything. Still love all the 80's pop to this day, except for Jacko, Springsteen, and a few others. Bands like The Outfield, Glass Tiger, Howard Jones.

Then, once I heard Motley Crue, Poison, Cinderella, Def Leppard.....it was all over. LOL!
Later on, after reading magazine articles stating the influences of these bands.....that's when I began going back and discovering Punk (Dolls, Pistols, Ramones, Dead Boys) and 70's glam (Sweet, Mott the Hoople, Slade, T. Rex).

My true influences would be: Atlantic 1960s R&B/Latin Soul; "garage" bands such as Young Rascals and Soul Survivors(not shit like the crud that appropriated the term in the late 1970s); black and white gospel; various forms of "Latin" music including planchar(ask Marcus what it is [img]wink.gif[/img] ); classical music and opera, including Italian comic opera; Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robbins.

(...struggling to avoid going into attack mode over someone calling the Dolls "punk", especially when they mentioned Sweet properly in the same sentence...)

Relax. Yes, I think NYDolls are more glam than punk, but once again, and we've all gone over it a million times, where exactly is the line? I don't get into the technical definitions of categorizing everything, but I more or less listed them, to differentiate it from hardcore punk, which I was not a big fan of. For some reason, to me, if I had listed the Dolls with all the English glam bands, it wouldn't have fit.
I discovered The Dolls at the same time as I discovered the rest of the "punk" bands I listed, so I've always lumped them in with them.
I really think they were closer to The Ramones in sound than, say, Slade....so go ahead and flip out if you want to.....but mainly it was just to list one of my influences, because I love The Dolls.
